A COUPLE OF SCHNEIDER GLASS PIECES FROM THE BARBRA STREISAND COLLECTION
by: Iza
May 06, 2010
WOW! Time sure flies! My "little dream" is to be able to keep this blog fairly current but if I only write every six months or so that "won't work"! As I was listing these two great Le Verre Francais glass items it occured to me how NEAT it was that they are both from the BARBRA STREISAND COLLECTION and they were auctioned in 1994 by Christie's. They are both of extremely fine quality and I love the "Chats" and how the shadows of the cats dance on the glass. Other than that, this year in March we did the Architectural Digest Home Design show again and had a lot of fun.

MODERNISM SHOW IN MIAMI CANCELED AGAIN
by: Iza
January 11, 2010
THE MIAMI MODERNISM show got canceled after being moved from December 2009 to January 2010. So sad. We were really looking forward to doing it but I guess "the economy" has made everyone cautious about spending the money & time to travel all the way here to do the show. On the other hand, with the cold cold weather we've had it's probably a good thing it got canceled!!!
Our next show will be in New York as we get ready to do the Architectural Digest Home Design Show again. Looking forward to it!!! More as we firm everything up. Show dates are in March 2010.

We were fortunate to have a visit from French art deco expert Prof. Richard Rock this January. Richard is known for his discerning eye, sardonic humor and, as a former professional dancer, his ability to leap over flamingos in a single bound. Here is Prof. Rock examining a flamingo from our front yard flamingo farm.

ROCK THE BOAT SHOW ON BOARD MEGAYACHT "SEAFAIR" by: Iza November 29, 2008
A beautiful balmy Miami night and we are invited to the "Rock the Boat" affair on board the "Seafair". A "megayacht" docked in front of the Fountainbleau Hotel in Miami Beach....on Collins & 45th.
The show is advertised as: "A Showcase of Jewelry, Art & Design Aboard Seafair, the World's First Megayacht Venue"....a small but very interesting show! Silver Fund is exhibiting their usually fine silver including a very cute Jaeger-LeCoultre Mystery Clock. Lots of jewelry: Cartier & Better! Lumari is showing some wonderful sequined creations....including a "New York" jacket which is shown in the next entry. Other exhibitors included Chaumet, Paris, Galerie Re, Marrakech, Graff Diamonds and Martin du Louvre who brought a stunning gold leaf bas-relief by Janniot titled "Eros". You can reach them at (561) 398 2523 for the duration of the show (until the 7th of December).
It's fun to be in Miami most of the time but Art Basel brings a new dimension to "Our Town"...this show being a part of the festivities.

JERRY ROTH WE'LL MISS YOU
by: Iza
August 19, 2008
We first met Jerry Roth in New York, where we had gone to meet as many of the WPA (Works Progress Administration) artists we could find! Ric & I were collecting works from the WPA.
Jerry had been the youngest artist in the WPA, beginning at the age of 16. As part of the artists' group, Roth created posters for tourism, culture and public health initiatives in bold, striking designs.
We became friends with him and his wife, Nettie, and enjoyed many great dinners and endless conversation. We will miss you, Jerry!
He died of complications from pneumonia at the age of 90.

by: Iza
June 11, 2008
In 1979 or so, Ric & I were in Chicago at the O'Hare show and we met Penny and saw some of the great Chase she was selling...and we bought our first Chase catalog. Where has the time gone? We saw her at the San Francisco Deco by the Bay Show this past weekend...and had a nice visit. Check out the great chairs in her booth! Penny is retiring. Well, not REALLY retiring but is tired of all the furniture schlepping and has other plans to "have fun". Best of Luck to you, Penny!!!! She's having a great sale of her collection. ISA CONVENTION IN BALTIMORE
by: Iza
May 29, 2008
...AND A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE IT WAS! During the next few weeks, we will write about some of the "talks" Ric attended.
Judith Bresler, Esq. is an attorney who specializes in the law and business and Counsel to Withers Bergman LLP. A published author, she has thaught art law as a member of various University faculties. The title of her talk was: Expert Opinions and Liabilities: The Treacherous Power of Words
Ric wanted to attend this lecture as he has been called many times to provide expert witness on art and residential contents. The talk addressed some of the more common liabilites that an expert can face when providing expert witness, specifically as pertains to fakes and forgeries.

BEST OF MIAMI MODERNISM 2008 # 1 - MARK MCDONALD
by: Iza
February 03, 2008
There was so much wonderful stuff at the show we really had to walk around and look very carefully. Our first "Best of Miami Modernism 2008" is a set of six glass mosaic panels belonging to Mark McDonald (www.markmcdonald.biz).
These six glass mosaic panels, each panel over 8 ft. tall and 3 ft. wide were the first thing we saw as we walked into the show every day! Actual measurements for the four center panels are 104 1/2" high x 36" wide and the outer panels each 30 1/2 wide and described as:
"Six large translucent mosaic polychrome tessare panels, depicting gigantic water lilies in a lake of green and blue swirls with earthy tones and pinks."
These panels were from the lobby of "The Caribbean" hotel in Miami Beach, designed by L. Murray Dixon in 1941. Don't know who actually created the panels. Congratulations, Mark!
More "picks" tomorrow...keep on looking! Show for this year is now closed, everyone packed out and done and we'll write up all the exciting news about next year's Miami Modernism Show later.

THE BOOTH AT THE MIAMI MODERNISM SHOW 2008
by: Iza
February 03, 2008
Here's our booth at the Miami Modernism show. The Jules Leleu sideboard is against the back wall as well as a very rare Secretary Desk by Donald Deskey, of Radio City Music Hall design fame.
Against the black wall are two French art deco silver leaf side chairs upholstered in mint green Scalamandre silk and a nickeled mirror by L. Charles of the Lyon, France "School". On either side of the mirror, a pair of American nickeled sconces. A Fletcher Aviation desk is in the center of the booth.
Would love to hear your comments on our display!

Art Deco & Modernism
by: Iza
January 28, 2008
We're sort of new to this "blog" thing but we are going to give it a try!
First of all, it's not only our blog, it is also YOUR BLOG!!! We WELCOME comments, ideas, photos, announcements, show reports, questions and even BOOK REVIEWS on Modernism, Art Deco, Fifties or even Sixties and Seventies!
The picture we've posted is of one of our FAVORITE lamps...sold a couple of years ago but to us, it's "modernism"! An American art deco torchiere was designed and constructed by Edward Schnorr in the 1930's.
A FEW RULES for our "blog".
1. Try to keep it relevant to the 20th Century fine and decorative arts movement. "Design" is always good! I'm sure the 18th and 19th century furniture aficcionados have their own forums.
2. Keep it clean..no profanity, slander or dirty pictures.
For our part, we will try to keep you updated to the latest and "best" of Modernism.... - We plan to visit the Modernism/Moderne shows and write reports with pictures and our "pick of the show". - Articles written by us or others "in the know" regarding Art Deco - Interesting deco objects we encounter at shows or shops in our travels...with pictures.
We welcome your comments!!!!
