Donald Deskey was one of American Modern design's most famous names. He designed apartments for Adam Gimbel and John D. Rockefeller Jr., but his most famous commission was the Palace of American Art Deco - Radio City Music Hall.
Deskey's commissions were executed by the Company of Mastercraftsmen and Schmieg & Kotzian. He also designed furniture for his own company, Deskey-Vollmer and Amodec. Some of his best designs were for Widdicomb Furniture Company of Grand Rapids in the 1930's. (1894-1989) for the Widdicomb Furniture Company Grand Rapids, Michigan. Constructed of exotic veneers with black lacquer base and brushed steel handles. The base extends up one side with a brushed steel bar. The chest retains its brass "Widdicomb" tag and is 36 ½" high, 44" wide and 18" deep.
