Jules Leleu was born in Bologne-sur-Mer, France and at age 26 succeeded his father in the family painting business. With his brother he began work in the Decorating field. After World War I, Leleu specialized in furniture making. He opened a Paris gallery in 1924 and exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Industrielle et Arts Decoratifs. Leleu designed the Grand Salon of the Ambassadors at the Society of Nations in Geneva and the French Embassies of several nations. He contributed furnishings for numerous steamships in the 1930's.

(1883 – 1961) in the 1930’s. Constructed of costly solid macassar ebony and veneers with bronze fittings and sabots, the suite consists of a sideboard, server, dining table and eight chairs. The table has a hidden mechanism which extends to support two 15 ½” “tablecloth” leaves. The chairs are covered in glove soft pumpkin colored leather. The suite has been refinished, the chairs reupholstered. The sideboard measures 101” wide x 24” deep and 36 ½” high. The server is 59” wide, 20” deep and 38 ½” high. The table is 78 ¾” long x 39 ½” wide and 29” high. The chairs are 19” wide and deep and 42” high.

(1883 – 1961) designed this famous living room set of a canapé (couch) and three fauteuils (armchairs) in 1932. This set dates from 1945. The frames are of solid oak with bronze sabots on the front feet. The couch & chairs are upholstered in a tapestry woven at the “Aubusson Atelier Pinton” after a design by Paul-Elie Gerneze (1888-1948). A twin to the set is in the Collection Mobilier, Paris and is pictured in color in Leleu 50 Ans de Mobilier et de Decoration 1920 – 1970. One similar chair is pictured in Jules & Andre Leleu. The sofa measures 66” wide x 28” deep and the back is 33 ½” high. The three chairs are 24 ½” wide x 21” deep and 33 ½” high.

in the 1930’s.  the high back chairs were one of Leleu’s enduring and recognizable designs and incorporate several of his design motifs such as the indentation at the top front of the saber legs and the rounded knob where the chair back meets the seat.  The mahogany frame is in high gloss and seats and backs are covered in Alcantara suede.  The chairs are 20” wide x 19” deep and 42” high.

(1883 – 1961) and was created in the 1930’s. The elegantly curved palissandre arm fronts terminate in saber feet with bronze sabots. The rear saber feet and trim are also palissandre. The body, box arms and loose seat cushions are covered in butterscotch colored fine calfskin. Each chair measures 36” wide x 35” deep and is 34” high. The sofa measures 80” wide, 35” deep and is 34” high.

(French), 1883-1961, at its best! This is the most exciting Leleu sideboard we’ve ever had for sale. Sitting on an African rosewood base with gold leafed bronze sabots and trim this French art deco sideboard features intricate Palissandre veneers in diamond and square shapes with mother of pearl dots in the center. The two pillars have inlays of squirrels, butterflies, flowers, stars and leaves. The center two doors open to reveal a shelf with two drawers and the side doors cover a shelf each, with detail marquetry on the shelf fronts. The sideboard is further accented by ebonized wood trim and measures 90 ¾” long x 20” deep and is 38” high.

. The exterior is wonderfully grained macassar ebony. The two outer doors open to reveal an interior with two adjustable sycamore shelves with inlaid fronts. The two center doors are inlaid with macassar ebony in a "basket weave" pattern and this is further inlaid in a flowing leaf design in fruitwood with Mother of Pearl flowers. Behind the two center doors is another sycamore interior with a shelf supporting two drawers. The whole rests on macassar legs with bronze sabots. There are bronze details and bronze trim around a 1 ½ marble top. The whole measures 95" long x 20 ½ deep x 40" high.
