Original American Art Deco Art by a WPA Artist

This ca. 1937 watercolor of a woman with a smoking gun in her hand and standing over a fallen man is titled “He Done Her Wrong” and is by Jerry Roth who was, at 16, the youngest artist of the WPA.  The watercolor is 17” x 10 5/8” and is signed in pencil on the lower right “Jerome Henry Roth”.

Jerry Roth (1918 – 2008) was born Jerome Rothstein in the Bronx, New York.  He acquired the middle name “Henry” at the age of four when he became dangerously ill with pneumonia.  Jewish tradition contrived to fool the Angel of Death who would come to Earth with orders to take Jerome Rothstein.  At a later date he became Jerry Roth.

WPA Color Lithograph by Francis Shields

A color lithograph by Francis Bernard Shields (1908 - ) for the Federal Art Project of the (FAP) of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in 1937. The print measures 11 ¾” high by 15 ¾ wide and is presented in a black wood frame with white mat. It is signed in pencil on the lower right “Shields”, titled in pencil on the lower center “Thought Rythms” also in pencil. On the lower left it is stamped “Federal Art Project, NYC, WPA”.

Surrealistic Etching by Kurt Seligmann “Oedipus & Antigone”

This surrealist etching is by Kurt Seligmann (1900 - 1962). This work "Oedipus & Antigone" is from 1943 and was published in an edition of 50 by Durlacher Brothers in New York. This etching was done prior to his monumental "Myth of Oedipus" series published in 1944. The etching is signed in pencil on the lower right "K Seligmann 1943" and titled on the lower left in pencil "Oedipus and Antigone" The plate is 17 ¾" by 11 7/8" and is presented in a black wooden frame 25 1/2" x 19". The print is in excellent condition and is number 101 in "Kurt Seligmann, his Graphic Work".

 

Surrealistic Etching by Kurt Seligmann “The Slaying of Laius”

This surrealist etching is by Kurt Seligmann (1900 - 1962). Seligmann was anointed a surrealist by Andre Breton in 1937, escaped Nazi France in 1939 and settled in America. This work "The Slaying of Laius", is from edition of 50 examples illustrating the myth of Oedipus it was published in 1944 and has been described as "Surely his masterpiece, and one of the greatest works of surrealistic printmaking". The plate is 17 ¾" by 11 ¾" and is framed in an ebonized wood frame 28" x 22". The print is in excellent condition. It is number 104 in "Kurt Seligmann, his Graphic Work".

Rare DOUGLAS LOCKWOOD Oil on Board Painting

This impressionistic oil on board painting is by Douglas Lockwood (1905 - ).  Titled “Moon, Sun, Tide”, it was painted in 1953 and exhibited at the Willard Gallery in New York City where Lockwood had a solo exhibition in 1954.  Frank Lloyd Wright visited the exhibition and told The New York Times “A Lockwood Painting should be in every house Frank Lloyd Wright designs”.  The painting was subsequently exhibited in 1958 at the Delaware Art Museum.  The painting is in its original frame (which has the title in pencil on the wood back).  It is 14 ¾” high x 21 ¾” wide, the frame is 7/8” wide and 2” deep.

Matta Etching “Fecondite”

This etching and aquatint in colors was done in 1971 by Roberto Antonio Sebastian Matta Echaurren (1921 - 2002) known as Matta. The print titled “Fecondite” amd was issued in the portfolio “Les Pisstile et Pistile”. The print is signed in pencil on the lower left “Essai” and signed in pencil on the lower right with Matta’s cypher. It was produced in edition of 125 with 35 hors commerce. The print is number 239 in “Matta, Catalogue Raisonee de L’oeuvre Grave 1943 –1974” and is 15” x 11” . It is presented in a blond wood frame which measures 19 ½” x 14 ¼”.

George Braque Lithograph

This lithograph by George Braque (1882 - 1963) reprises his early cubistic work with guitars. It is from "oui" by Erik Satie Published in 1959 by P.A Benoit. The print is signed in pencil on the lower right "G. Braque" and also marked in pencil on the lower right "13/30". It is also signed in the plate. The image is pictured in "Les livres de réalisés par PAB" and in "Braque, the complete graphics". The print is presented in an ebonized wood frame which measures 15" x 17 7/8"

French Art Deco Jungle Cat and Gazelle Carved Wood Placque

A leaping jungle cat springs in the center of the 1920’s French art deco hand carved wall plaque. The cat with an impossibly long tail is after a leaping gazelle…who sports impossibly long hind legs. All this takes place amid a landscape of cactus and tropical foliage. The plaque is 15” high and 23 ½” wide.

American Art Deco Aluminum Lovebirds Placque

This spectacular American art deco aluminum wall plaque was designed by sculptor Rene Chambellan (1893-1955) one of the foremost practitioners of the art deco style in America. His work is in such deco architectural icons as the American Radiator Building, Chicago Tribune Building, Daily News Building and most famously in the Chanin Building. The aluminum plaque which shows, in low relief, two parakeets or lovebirds against a stylized deco ground is 12 ¼” high and 8 ¾” wide. The plaque is signed on the lower right “Rene P. Chambellan, N.Y. City.” It is also marked on the reverse “Alcoa. 43. Alloy, the US Aluminum Co., Fairfield. Conn, Patt #4406”.

LARGE AMERICAN ART DECO SCULPTURED DEER WALL PLAQUE

This large American art deco plaster on metal sculptured plaque dates from the 1930’s and shows two deer amid stylized forest and foliage. The plaque measures 39 ½” high and is 28” wide.

Austrian Art Deco Heroic Drawing by Heinrich-Karl Scholz

This 1930’s Austrian art deco pencil drawing is a study for a monument by Heinrich-Karl Scholz (1880 - ).  Scholz was well known in the first half of the 20th Century as a sculptor and his bronzes have sold at auction in Europe and America.  The drawing, which depicts two helmeted nude figures, one with a sword inside an alcove with inscriptions on either side, is annotated 1:5 indicating the final sculpture would be almost five feet tall.  The drawing measures 17 3/8” x 11 ¾” and is presented matted in a brown wood frame measuring 21 ½” x 17”.  The drawing is signed on the lower right “H.K. Scholz 1930” and has his blindstamp on the lower left.

Paul Cadmus ”Ballet Dancer”

A striking serigraph by Paul Cadmus (1904 – 1999) titled “Ballet Dancer”. The image of a young dancer printed in 1953 in dark grey and white on grey laid paper and is number 15 in an edition of 20. The print is signed in pencil “Cadmus” on the lower right and numbered on the lower left “15/20” in pencil. The print is No. 51 in Davenport’s Catalog Raisone of his graphic work and measures 11 5/8” x 9 ¼”.

French Art Deco Painting by Andre Hofer

“Harvest” a large and important oil on canvas painting by André Hofer (1890 – 1973), French. This French art deco era painting shows a reclining man sampling grapes and being attended by four Rubenesque nudes. Hofer exhibited regularly at the Salon de Independents from 1912 on but earned his fame illustrating works by Kipling, Pearl Buck, Baudelaire, Balzac, Anatol France, Goethe, Victor Hugo and Oscar Wilde among others. The painting which is 77” high and 97” wide is signed and dated on the lower right “André Hofer 1924”.

French Art Deco Eagle Watercolor by Raymond Bigot

Raymond Bigot (1872 - 1953), French, along with Paul Jove, Jacques Nam and Henri Deleurmoz revitalized the French "Animalier" tradition. This watercolor of a stern and regal eagle is in its original macassar ebony frame which can be hung from a wall or placed on a piece of furniture. The watercolor measures 10" x 8" and the frame measures 18 1/4" x 16".

Henry Faulkner Oil Painting

This oil on masonite painting is by Henry Lawrence Faulkner (1924- 1981). It is titled on the back "Wildflowers". Henry loved to paint flowers. They gave him free rein to shower his paintings with color. Vincent Price, a noted art critic as well as famous actor, called Henry "America’s Foremost Colorist". The painting is signed on the lower right "Faulkner". Faulkner’s works are in the collections of the Corcoran and Philips Museums in Washington, DC, and were also in the private collections of Tennessee Williams, Berthold Brecht, C.V. Whitney, Nathan Cummings and Vincent Price, among others. The painting is in the original "old" frame used by Faulkner. The board measures 11 1/2" x 8" and the painting is 15 1/2" x 12 1/8"overall. Provenance: the collection of Ric Emmett. References: The Outrageous Life of Henry Faulkner: Portrait of an Appalachian Artist, Charles House, 1988. Originally published by the University of Tennessee Press in 1988. A paperback edition was published in 2005.

Henry Faulkner Oil on Canvas Painting

This oil on canvas painting is by Henry Lawrence Faulkner (1924 – 1981). The painting of a headless violinist with a butterfly was done after a famous 1976 weekend party in Liberty, Kentucky which Henry attended. Linda wanted her friends to visit her but Liberty was out of the way. She said "You all would come to my funeral…" So she had a funeral, complete with rented coffin. At the beginning of the party, a butterfly landed on her shoulder and stayed there for the weekend. Henry painted butterflies in his paintings for a period after the party. The painting is 18" x 12" and is in a black frame which is 20" x 14" overall.

HENRY FAULKNER Oil Painting

This oil on board painting is by Henry Lawrence Faulkner (1924 – 1981), American.  The painting of a white and pink pottery pitcher filled with Summer flowers including Tiger Lilies, Daisies, Asters and Mums is signed on the lower left “Faulkner”.  Faulkner’s works are in the collections of the Corcoran and Philips Museums in Washington, DC, and were also in the private collections of Tennessee Williams, Berthold Brecht, C.V. Whitney, Nathan Cummings and Vincent Price, among others.  The painting is in the original “old” frame used by Faulkner.  For commissioned paintings (as opposed to work for gallery sale), one gave Henry an old frame and he painted it to fit that frame.  The board measures 20” x 10” and 23 ½” x 13 ½” overall.   Provenance:  the Collection of Ric Emmett who purchased it directly from the artist.  References:  The Outrageous Life of Henry FaulknerPortrait of an Appalachian Artist, Charles House, 1988.  Originally published by the University of Tennessee Press in 1988.  A paperback edition was published in 2005.  Lots of information is available about Henry Faulkner on the Internet.

A French Art Deco Painting in the Style of Jean Dupas

A large (four foot, four inches by five foot, four inches) French art deco oil on canvas painting in the style of Jean Dupas (1882 – 1964), It was created in the 1930’s and installed in the Club Social General Rodriguez in Buenos Aires, Argentina at that time. The painting graced the Club Social until its closing in the late 1980’s and was rescued before the building was demolished. The allegorical deco canvas, in Dupas’ mature style, depicts the ancient Greek tale of the Judgment of Paris. Cleaned and re-stretched, the painting is in excellent condition, ready for your choice of frame.

French Art Deco Painting by Wilhelm LeFebre

This French art deco painting is by Albert Wilhelm LeFebre (1873 – 1974) and is titled in German “Kamfende Kentaurn” (Centaurs after the Battle).  The oil on canvas in its original frame measures ten feet across by four feet high.  The painting is signed and dated on the lower center “LeFebre-Wilhelm, Paris 1912”.

Louis Icart French Art Deco Pastel Drawing

This lovely French art deco drawing of a coy young lady is by Louis Icart (1880 – 1950), famous for his etchings and drawings of women in the deco era. The drawing portrays a damsel in a feathery dress, masked for a ball and holding a yellow fan. It is signed on the lower left “Louis Icart”. Presented in a custom black and gold frame with a black mat, the paper measures 17” x 12 ½” and 26 ½” x 22” overall.
